Design systems used to answer one question: how does one designer's judgment scale across a team? There's a second question now — how does it scale to a machine that builds? The answer turned out to be the same: write the system down.

The spec is how you brief a machine

This site is built AI-assisted, and the first artifact of the rebuild wasn't a page — it was a written design language. Nine color tokens, each with usage rules. Three typefaces with stated roles — display, story serif, technical micro — and the contexts each is allowed in. A structural grammar: sections divide with hairlines, not boxes; no cards, no shadows; one accent color in micro-doses only. Four permitted motion moves, with a kill-switch for all of them when someone prefers reduced motion. When an AI agent builds a page, I don't review it against my taste that day. I review it against the document.

What makes a language machine-followable

  • Rules, not just values. A hex code tells a builder nothing about restraint. "The accent appears in micro-doses only — eyebrow bullets, tag dots, hover states; never blocks, never backgrounds" is a rule a machine can follow and I can review against.
  • Prohibitions do the heavy lifting. The "never" list — no other hues, no rounded containers, no scroll-jacking — constrains the output space more than any palette does. Machines and new teammates alike align fastest on what's out of bounds.
  • Voice is part of the system. The copy rules live in the same spec: facts over adjectives, honest labels, numbers instead of "passionate." Tone drifts exactly like color does — unless it's specified.

The old lesson, new audience

None of this is new discipline. The Gardena Bluetooth App's design system was architected so one foundation could re-skin for Flymo and McCulloch — stricter rules in exchange for triple the reach. Design systems have always traded freedom for coherence. What's changed is who's on the other end of the rules: first other designers, then developers, now machines. The clearer the language, the better every one of them builds.
